Values Analysis Using The Scaled Comparison
The content of a Scaled Comparison questionnaire, with few exceptions, is always developed for a specific situation in an organization. The samples shown here contain examples of questions and issues that could be used, but the actual content of an assessment in your organization would be custom-developed.
The Scaled Comparison asks a person filling out a questionnaire to compare the importance of two values using the following format:
| Question: |
Which of the following tactical values have been more important in the past success of the organization? |
| Risk taking |
 |
Flexibility and adaptability |
|
|
In the actual questionnaire, the respondent is presented with a full page of such pairs rather than a single pair. Each value is paired with each of the others a number of times.
In the first example, the person completing the form is asked to think about the way things have been the organization and indicate which value has been more important to the organization's past success. (Note: The examples only show a portion of all the decisions that will be made.)
| Question: |
Which of the following tactical values have been more important in the past success of the organization? |
|
|
The same process, using the same list of values, but a different question is used to determine the values thought to be more important for success in the organization's future.
| Question: |
Which of the following tactical values will be more important in the future success of the organization? |
|

The Reports
The Scaled Comparison produces different reports that illustrate and summarize the way the respondents viewed the importance of the values.
The Gap Analysis clearly shows values that may have been important in the past success of the organization that will need to change if success is to continue in the future. It also shows that some important past values will remain important in the future.

|
The same data as above, but displayed in a different format, the Hi/Lo Matrix shows the importance of the values in the past and future. Although these reports are backed by solid statistical data, they are easily read and interpreted.

The Subgroup Summary - People view values differently depending on where they are in the organization, or where they are in any other demographic category. You will want to see the results broken down by important demographics.
